EW Djembe
The Djembe, a rather large wooden hand drum, it originates from the West African countries of Mali, Senegal, Guinea and the Ivory Coast but has for the last centuries found it's way into both worldmusic and contemporary music and is widely known for percussionists and western hand drummers, it goes in the category of membranophones and has a drumhead made out of animal skin and is known for it's deep bass sound. Though the djembe has been sampled many times before we felt like it hadn't been done so meticulously as we liked it to be and so we began recording this instrument into the multisampled EW Djembe.
The renown percussionist Erik Widén laid the hits for this brilliant instrument that comes from his own collection, it has and edgy and but realistic feel, sounds from when the finger and hand lifts from the drumhead has not been edited out for an even more realistic feel. The djembe is one of those African instruments that really can be blended into modern music.
The idea is that with a quality midi claviature or pad you hit a different midi velocity with each hit and still be able to play gently or really hard with an exceptional realistic feel to it.
Playing Techniques (Recorded):
"Bass open" is played with an open palm in the center of the drum leaving the skin directly after the hit allowing the skin to vibrate freely.
"Bass muffled" is performed as the open bass except for letting the hand stay on the skin creating a more muffled sound.
"Tone" is played by hitting the rim with the base of the hand. The relaxed fingers then hit the drumhead and immediately rebound back for an open "singing" sound.
"Muffled" follows the same principle as "Bass muffled" and is performed as a "Tone" but with the fingers staying on the skin.
"Finger" may be a non-ordinary stroke in djembe playing but still a useful sound. It is done by hitting the skin close to the rim with only one finger.
"Ruff" is played by letting the fingers hit the head subsequently starting from the little finger, close to the rim. The actually main stroke hence occurs a few milliseconds after the trigging of the sampling, which should be mentioned.
